NDP supports Sultan's call to strengthen family institution

Hj Ali Yusop

The National Development Party (NDP) welcomed the titah of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam in calling on government agencies, especially those responsible for tackling social issues and welfare, to focus on formulating plans and policies to strengthen the family institution in the country.

His Majesty in the titah at the opening of the first meeting of the 8th Session of the Legislative Council on Thursday morning underscored the important role of the family institution in tackling social issues and safeguarding the welfare of the people of Brunei.

The monarch also touched on the roles and responsibilities of penghulus and village heads, voicing his displeasure with those who have neglected their duties.

"NDP's Supreme Council shares the concern of His Majesty on this matter and fully supports the call made by His Majesty on the need for a more focused effort to formulate plans and policies to strengthen the family institution," said Hj Ali Yusop, the Head of the NDP Information and Public Relations Bureau.

"For that matter, NDP recalled its proposals as outlined in its manifesto for the year 2006-2016. Among others, NDP has proposed that a special department be established to stimulate and generate happy families in the country," he said.

NDP has also proposed that efforts be taken to set out policies and legislate on family laws and the rights of family members to give protection to children and wives who are victims of domestic violence, and to monitor and ensure the objectives of such policies and legislation are achieved, he added.

"Importantly, we need to ensure that all families are taken care of by providing them with basic facilities comprising comfortable housing, security protection and balanced nutrition - especially for children.

"As such, the authorities perhaps should consider giving a monthly food allowance of B$200 for every newborn baby until the age of formal schooling, and children in formal schools are to be given a monthly food allowance of $300 until they complete secondary school," Hj Ali Yusop added.

He further said that NDP would also like to see the government give due consideration to its suggestion to ensure all orphans and single mothers are free from destitution, and are guaranteed of their expenses for food, clothing, housing, as well as for the schooling of orphans until the age of 18 years or until they complete their studies at His Majesty's Government's expense at the secondary or tertiary level.

In addition, he added, the government should also look into NDP's proposal that a comprehensive scheme be created to eradicate poverty to the point that none of His Majesty's subjects shall be qualified to be recipients of Zakat (tithe) under the categories of poor (fakir) and destitute (miskin).

"We have also suggested that the relevant authorities should look into the idea of providing counselling services to ensure the continuity and perpetuation of family lineages, and a society and nation that is sovereign, respectable and secure," said Hj Ali Yusop.

"In line with the wish of His Majesty, we suggest the government should also consider providing necessary and appropriate services, protection and guidance to those involved in unhealthy and immoral activities - such as drug addicts, former criminals, prostitutes, AIDS sufferers and others.

"In conclusion, NDP would like to see the nation develop into a welfare state according to the concept of 'Baldatun Thaiyyibatun Warabbun Ghafour' (a peaceful and prosperous nation state worthy of the clemency of Allah, the Most Glorious, Exalted) by utilising in a beneficial way every cent of the natural wealth granted by Allah the Almighty and to ensure that it is distributed to the rightful recipients directly or indirectly," he added.
