THE Brunei History Centre is organising a video-making competition for the first time to promote history using multimedia and information technology.

At a press conference at the centre yesterday, Senior History Officer Hanafi Hj Salleh explained that the competition was a new way to boost historical research.

"The competition is seen as an early step towards producing more historical videos that can be used by the centre to further spread information about history," Hanafi said.

Themed Sejarah Di Mana-Mana (History is Everywhere), the main goal of the competition is to make history more interesting by using creative media. The documentaries should focus on events, items or places of historical interest.

Videos can be about personal recollections or even an individual's family tree or life experiences.

Aside from promoting the learning of history through video, the competition is aimed at collecting more historical material from the public.

Organisers hope the competition will raise awareness about history and the creative industry.

The competition is open to locals and permanent residents and is free. Videos can be made using videophones, electronic tablets or pocket cameras.

The videos should be seven to 10 minutes in length and be in the style of a documentary. Computer software can be used to edit the video and voice-overs can be added on.

Videos using the Malay language would be given priority.

Videos entered into the competition must be sent in DVD format. They should be original and non-contentious. Videos entered will become the property of the organisers of the competition.

Judges will look at six criteria script, shooting, editing, voice-over, creativity and new findings. Each criteria carries a cash prize of $500.

The competition will close on March 9, 2013.

Entry forms can be downloaded online via the links http://www.facebook.com/VideoDokumentariSejarah2013 or http://www.pusat-sejarah/gov.bn.

Participants must submit two copies of the video together with a completed entry form. Students wishing to participate must have a letter of permission from their school principal.

The competition secretariat is located at the Brunei History Centre in Jalan Stoney, Bandar Seri Begawan. Organisers can be contacted on 2240166, 2240167 or 2240168.
