The King of Thailand is 5.4 million times wealthier than his average "subject"

Who are the world's wealthiest heads of state? You'd be surprised.

By Federica Cocco

You'd think the richest nations would have the richest leaders. But it's not the US or Germany that have the richest leaders.

The great majority of the world's wealthiest leaders are in fact heads of state in oil-rich nations, like Brunei and the United Arab Emirates. No African head of state features among the top ten richest rulers in the world. Though the leader of one tiny European country makes the top ten.

And what's even more shocking is how much more they're worth that the average citizen

Rich leader, poor country?

It's interesting that, among the nations listed above, the UK has the highest net worth per capita. Although the sample is small, it raises questions over whether there's a correlation between how wealthy your leader is and how poor you - the citizen - are.

However the data we have come across did not show a strong enough correlation.

David Cameron is Europe's wealthiest head of government

The only European head of state among the top ten is the Prince of Liechtenstein, whose personal fortune was built through his ownership of LGT Bank.

He is followed in Europe by Prince Albert II of Monaco who boasts an estimated £620 million in wealth.

After Queen Elizabeth (an estimated £280 million) and the Kings of Sweden (£26.2 million) and Norway (£10.8 million), David Cameron at number 23 is the wealthiest non-royal head of state in Europe, with a comparatively meagre £3.8  million.

Angela Merkel - who leads Europe's strongest economy - did not even make it to the top 25.
