Opinion: Brunei needs more development and modernisation

Dear Editor,

IT'S NICE to know that the government is revamping the public transport system with new buses and regulations.

But I am more concerned about the country's Vision 2035. We have been given to understand about big developmental projects like uplifting Kampong Ayer and the Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB) Masterplan sometime back. Impressive graphics, visuals and videos gave us a glimpse of how things would be in the near future.

Over a year has gone by, I haven't heard anything about those things. Looks like the grand plans are yet to take off. I'm talking about the promised infrastructure. I mean the new-look buildings, libraries, entertainment set-ups, financial district, boutique hotels, national theatre, international trade and exhibition centre etc that have been showcased. Will things materialise? Will the Vision be a reality or just remains on the paper?

I think the government should be more proactive and make the people aware of the development and progress in the country. I feel the people are oblivious of any development, in the absence of government enlightenment, and hence, tend to get swayed by things circulating on the social media.

Therefore, the government should take things seriously. There should be proper advertisements informing people about the revamped public transportation and about the new buses and the routes on which they would be plied.

Though the minister had listed out the steps to improve and upgrade transportation, what puzzles me is the lack of interest in public transport.

Though its cheap and safe, a majority of people stay away from public transport.

I just want to say that a country having the highest number of cars per person doesn't become a developed and rich country. In fact, a country that has a better and well-connected public transport is much developed. At the same time people should realise the advantages in taking to public transport.

The government must contribute and work towards its Vision.

I'm impressed by the many beautiful mosques in the country.

There seems to be some development, with new restaurants and business establishments, near the airport, whose upgradation and development has given an impetus to business in its vicinity.

Yet I want to see more development and growth as I love my country.

Brunei Lover
