Family-friendly centres seen to cut common productivity busters at work

Tuesday, December 6, 2011

THE Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports is planning to set up a family-friendly centre in a bid to encourage widespread adoption of an initiative that is seen to raise productivity in the workplace.

Deputy Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Datin Paduka Hjh Adina Othman has advocated the setting up of family-friendly centres at all workplaces, both in public and private sectors, to enhance employee productivity.

The centre seeks to address the problem with many employees spending a lot of time daily in picking up children from school, she told The Brunei Times.

Parents pick up their children from religious schools at 3.30pm, she said, adding that it is an awkward time and many employees do not return to work after sending their children home.

"In terms of production, we are losing out," she said.

Having family-friendly centres will allow parents to bring their children back to the office to be cared for until work hours are over, she said.

A survey was undertaken by the ministry to find out whether the employees were keen on having these centres, and the results pointed out respondents were even willing to pay for the service at the centres, Datin Hjh Adina said.

"The money will be used to hire child carers at the centre. We hope to see all government ministries and the private sector taking this into account," she said.

A few other ministries have already undertaken the initiative which she had commended.

"There should be family-friendly centres at all workplaces," she said.

Meanwhile, Datin Hjh Adina said these centres can also incorporate breastfeeding facilities.

"We should encourage breastfeeding and we should have these facilities," she said.
