Temburong to become centre of Islamic learning

TEMBURONG is set to be transformed into an Islamic centre of learning and civilisation with the proposed relocation of the Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) campus.

His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday determined that the campus for the Islamic university should be established in Temburong. He said the move would considerably boost the district’s development.

“Like we imagined, Temburong will grow faster and become more appealing in the future,” said the monarch during the UNISSA convocation at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Berakas.

He added that the long-awaited bridge linking the district to the rest of the country would facilitate Temburong’s projected growth.

The bridge, slated for completion in 2018, is expected to significantly reduce travel time between the isolated district and Brunei-Muara. In his titah, the Sultan also urged UNISSA to produce scholars that are of ulama (Islamic religious scholars) calibre. “They will soon be the cornerstone of our strength, where strength is greatly needed by the country,” said His Majesty.

To achieve this ambitious goal, the monarch explained that UNISSA would require quality human resources, adding that measurements of quality should be in accordance with the “Islam Tulin” motto and the Malay Islamic Monarchy identity.

“We, altogether, cannot allow UNISSA to be carried away by paths other than that of Ahli Sunnah Waljama’ah,” he said.
