Brunei committed to helping establish favourable conditions for young people

COMMONWEALTH DAY MESSAGE

HIS Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, has delivered a message to commemorate Commonwealth Day.

"My people and I are pleased to join fellow members in celebrating Commonwealth Day. This year's Commonwealth Day theme of 'Opportunity through Enterprise', directs our attention to one of the most important challenges facing governments, particularly in developing countries," His Majesty said.

"We are delighted that the Commonwealth is committed to helping members establish the most favourable conditions for our young people to develop through entrepreneurship. In Brunei Darussalam, we continue to emphasise the need to create new sources of economic prosperity. This is set in our 'National Vision 2035' or 'Wawasan 2035', which includes providing opportunities for every citizen to improve their standard of living."

The monarch added that close cooperation among members of the Commonwealth was of great assistance to entrepreneurs.

"In this regard, I am happy to note that the Commonwealth-Asia Alliance of Young Entrepreneurs (CAAYE) successfully held its Interim and Year-End Summits last year in Kuala Lumpur and Mumbai, respectively."

His Majesty said success for an entrepreneur rested on the foundations of education and training. "My government will continue our commitment to provide full access to education to our people, thereby allowing them to develop their talents and reach their full potential."

In line with this commitment, he said Brunei Darussalam had supported Commonwealth efforts to help young entrepreneurs through various programmes and activities under the Commonwealth Fund for Technical Co-operation and the Commonwealth Youth Programme on Youth Entrepreneurship Training.

"We are pleased that the Commonwealth Charter has emphasised the importance of youth development and empowerment through employment and entrepreneurship," His Majesty said, adding that Brunei Darussalam would continue to offer its friendship and cooperation to all Commonwealth members to build a peaceful and prosperous future together.
